Minnesota legislators, who earn $31,140 per year for what is considered a part-time job, also can file for daily expenses on days they are in session.
During this year's session, they received a total of nearly $1.8 million in those per diem payments, according to an MPR analysis.
Many asked for the maximum amount. Forty-eight state representatives collected the maximum of $8,778, at the rate of $66 per day; 26 senators asked for the maximum of $11,438 at the rate of $86 per day allowed during session in the Senate.
The story notes that Rep. Peter Fischer, DFL-Maplewood, collected the lowest of all: $2,130.
The figures don't include per diem payments for the special session.
