GOP State Sen. Branden Petersen won't seek reelection

State Sen. Branden Peterson, a Republican from Andover who represents parts of Anoka County, said in a Tweet this morning that he's decided not to seek re-election next year.

The decision came after a year of thought, he wrote: "It's time for family and making a living."

He's now the third state Senate Republican who won't seek re-election. The others are Sens. Julianne Ortman of Chanhassen and Dave Brown of Becker.

Peterson was a co-author of the bill to legalize gay marriage in Minnesota, and has been active on medical marijuana and data privacy issues.

He'd faced much opposition from conservative groups for his position on gay marriage and expected a challenge from other Republicans had he decided to run.

He'd served one term in the state House before being elected to the state Senate in 2012.
